History of Sunnyside Lodge -The Spirit of Tahoe Hospitality
In 1866 Augustus Saxton settled on the richly wooded shore of Lake Tahoe, and Saxton Mills supplied railroad ties for the Central Pacific Railroad. In the 1880's, the mill closed and northern Californians started buying lakefront lots for vacation homes on Sunnyside Bay.
In 1908, the original Sunnyside building was the summer home of the wealthy founder of Schlage Lock Company, Captain Kendrick. The Captain enjoyed entertaining his rich and famous friends at his summer "lodge," Winston Churchill among his many guests.
In 1946, the Sears and Briner families turned the house into the Sunnyside Resort with a restaurant and seven guest rooms. During the 50's, Bill and Fritzi Briner promoted sailing, weekend sailboat races and Tahoe Yacht Club parties at Sunnyside.
In 1960, after the success of the Olympics at Squaw Valley, the restaurant and lodge opened to guests year-round. Winter sports had arrived at Lake Tahoe. By 1986, after nearly eighty years of service, the old building was in need of major renovation. A group of San Francisco families, and restaurateurs Jeff Oxandabourne, Sandy Saxten, Rob Thibaut and Bill Parsons decided to buy the property and rebuild the historic lodge.
The Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge re-opened in the summer of 1987 and
offers gracious hospitality on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.
