The Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum is a Lake Tahoe Time Capsule.

Summary

Features: Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum Tahoe will dazzle your mind with intriguing artifacts and documents from a lost time. Gatekeeper's Museum Lake Tahoe presents a sizable collection of Native American baskets, maps, newspapers, and other historical goodies.

Why We Go: Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum Tahoe will give you a cool look into what life was like for the water dam attendant.

  • The Photos: At the  Historic Gatekeeper's Cabin, you can peruse through photographs that give you a sneak peek into the past.
  • The Clothing: Gatekeeper's Log Cabin Museum Tahoe City showcases gorgeous clothing from the times. Back when dusty trails were the fashion runways, these clothes kept people warm and comfortable rather than looking stylish.
  • The Baskets: American Indian woven baskets are a work of art you'll want to see with your very own eyes. Famous Washoe weavers like Dat-so-la-lee and Maggie Mayo James created these works.

Inside Knowledge: Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum Tahoe even has exhibits on the 1960's Olympics and skiing. There's a bit of everything here, it would seem, and visitors love it that way.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Pack A Lunch: Bring a picnic lunch so that you can eat at the outdoor tables after visiting Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum Tahoe.
  • Do Order Pictures: If you want your own copies of historic photographs, you can buy them from Gatekeeper's Museum Lake Tahoe.
  • Don't Feel Confused About Boats: Thanks to the exhibit on steamers and boating history at Gatekeeper's Cabin Museum Tahoe, you will learn all kinds of interesting factoids.
  • Don't Come When It's Closed: You'll want to note that this cool place has limited public viewing times. Stop by Gatekeeper's Museum Lake Tahoe on Friday or Saturday between 11am and 5pm for a fun trip back in time.

Visit to Gatekeepers Museum

Very disappointed in the lack of displays regarding the "gatekeepers". I used to live in Tahoe so was anxious to share the history of the gatekeepers and their work with my family and grandchildren. Not only were there no real displays of people or pictures, the personnel were very nice but very uninformed about the history. Your descriptions in travel resources need to be rewritten or at least updated. Also perhaps the personnel could be "trained" or at least given a pamphlet to share with visitors. The baskets were great but that was about the only really interesting exhibit. If you decide to actually do a "gatekeepers" exhibit let me know as I would be glad to donate money. I visited the museum about 12 or 13 years ago and there was a nice exhibit at that time (mostly pictures of gatekeepers of the past.) What happened to it??
