The Thunderbird Lodge, a National Register Historic District, was built in 1936 by San Francisco millionaire George Whittell. It was Whittell's "summer cottage" on Lake Tahoe and consists of 2 master bedrooms, a great room complete with movie screen, 3 additional servants bedrooms and a fully functional kitchen with the original appliances.
The architect, Frederic DeLongchamps, was famous in his time and was the Nevada State Architect. The Lodge was built to blend harmoniously with its surroundings and therefore is made of stone. It is remarkable example of “old Tahoe” architectural style and master craftsmanship. Stone masonry and hand wrought ironwork are found throughout the secluded site’s Tudor-revival cottages and along the winding pathways, bridges, secret patios and fountains.
Gain knowledge of the history of the Nevada side of the Lake while enjoying breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and the nearby mountain ranges. Follow in the footsteps of George Whittell and Bill, his pet lion while exploring the Lodge, a 600-foot underground tunnel, the cardhouse and the boathouse – original home to the famous Thunderbird yacht.
The Thunderbird Lodge is open from May to October for guided tours. Reservations are required and there is an admission fee. The Lodge also offers a stunning location for weddings, conferences, corporate and special events. The Thunderbird Lodge is operated by the non-profit Thunderbird Preservation Society.
